Disease Prevention Education

HIV/AIDS Programs

The goals of all American Red Cross' HIV/AIDS programs are to:

  • Provide effective education to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS

  • Communicate the facts about HIV/AIDS that would reduce fear of HIV infection and of people who are living with HIV infection, including AIDS.

  • Demonstrate humanity and compassion towards all people affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Red Cross offers the following courses to help meet the goals of the HIV/AIDS Programs:

Workplace HIV/AIDS Program: Designed to further goals of the above and respond to community's needs and concern in the workplace and in the community.

A person could train to become a nationally recognized certified instructor in this course.

Starter Facts HIV/AIDS Program: Designed to help the community to develop a knowledge base about HIV/AIDS and skills in separating facts from misinformation and opinions. This course also helps participants to learn how to use the American Red Cross HIV/AIDS Facts Book effectively. Successful completion of the Facts Test is the prerequisite needed for entry into the Instructor courses: Starter Facts, Basic HIV/AIDS and African-American HIV/AIDS.

A person could train to become a nationally recognized certified instructor in this course.

Facts Practice Program: Has recently been streamlined into the the Instructor courses, however, it can be offered when asked for. It was designed to help put HIV/AIDS Facts into focus; to give practice for individuals wanting to become instructors; to answer HIV/AIDS questions correctly while maintaining a nonjudgmental perspective.

Basic HIV/AIDS Program: Designed to teach the community the facts in the hope of having them act responsibly to what they've learned. It is divided into two parts:

  1. Fundamentals: Designed to help the community learn facts accurately and in nonjudgmental and culturally sensitive ways.

  2. Prevention Skills: Designed to teach the community risk assessment, decision making, refusal, and correct condom use.

A person could train to become a nationally recognized certified instructor in this course.

African-American HIV/AIDS Program: Designed to teach this community, facts and information about HIV/AIDS and present them in a manner that is culturally affirming. This mildly to wildly Afro-centric program consist of many stand-alone initiatives that allow the community to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. There are four modules that can be used in the community:

  1. Starter Facts

  2. Facts in Focus

  3. Skills Building

  4. Community Mobilization

One of the stand-alone initiatives in the program is the "Talking Drum (Dono NToaso)". It consists of workbooks, posters, cards and key rings and was designed to help build HIV prevention skills in the African-American community.

A person could train to become a nationally recognized certified instructor in this course and upon completion would have a dual certification consisting of the Af-Am HIV/AIDS and of the Basic HIV/AIDS.
